Chapter 18 question (Sarah)

When the German officer finds out that szpilman is a Jew he still decides to help him hide from the SS and give him food. Why do you think he chose to help him? If you were the officer would you choose to help szpilman even though it could put your own life in danger?

  1. I think that the German officer knows the war is ending and he is just tired of killing innocent people. It would be so hard to live with that every day, I'm sure it made him feel good to for once not feel obligated to kill a jew because they were alone. And every one is human and have feelings.. I'm sure he felt really bad and wanted him to be able to survive.

  2. i think the Germann officer chose to help szpilman because, like kristen said, he was so tired of taking peoples lives except for his and he knew that what he was doing was bad and that maybe sparing someones life would make him feel better. if i were the officer, i would let the Jew go because how often would i get the chance to let one go when my leader is not watching. to me it would feel like such an accomoplishment to have freed him. it would make my day so much better knowing i did something good for someone else.
